As the entire film industry moves towards more sustainable production IATSE 856 is working with other Unions, Guilds and industry partners to provide resources, support and education.
GREEN PRODUCTION GUIDE
The Green Production Guide is an “industry online toolkit designed to reduce the film, television, and streaming industry’s carbon footprint and environmental impact. This site features a worldwide database of vendors that provide sustainable goods and services for film, television, and streaming production.
The GPG also offers tools and resources to help implement a sustainable plan for any size or kind of production. These tools include the Production Environmental Accounting Report (PEAR), which calculates a production’s carbon footprint; the Production Environmental Actions Checklist (PEACH), which details best practices for each department on a production; Sustainable Production Infographics, which provide helpful visual guides to ensure best practices in the office, on location, and on stage; and sample memos, signs and flyers to help communicate sustainability efforts to cast and crew.”
ALBERT
At Albert their objectives are to:
Inspire: empowering the industry to create content that supports a vision for a sustainable future
Restore: enabling the industry to make positive contributions to the environment while actively eliminating waste and carbon emissions from production
This is achieved with their Albert toolkit which “comprises of a carbon calculator and Carbon Action Plan.
The calculator allows you to work out the carbon footprint of your production, enabling you to see the impact of your production.
The Carbon Action Plan is designed for those productions who not only want to measure their carbon footprint but actively take steps towards reducing it.”
REEL GREEN
The Reel Green initiative, is a resource centre with a collection of best practices to help productions reduce their environmental impacts and improve their overall environmental footprint. The Reel Green™ initiative is a mainstay at Creative BC and is currently licensed to Manitoba Film and Music for local access.
DGC
The Directors Guild of Canada has established the DGC Green website which has practical tips for many aspects of film production as well as access to The Spark, a sustainable production primer, where one can “Learn the basics of systems thinking and explore the topics of materials, food and hydration, energy, fuel, and waste to advance sustainable production!”
